AVANTGARDISM AND MODERNITY
The author's aim has been to characterize and relate the concepts of avantgardism and modernity by comparing James Joyce's Ulysses with Thomas Mann's Der Zciuberberg and Lotte in Weimar.
Presenting a few general aspects of the relationship between the two authors, the book gives a short summary of its earlier manifestations. It also analyses the Dublin reality and symbolic background of the subject-matter of Ulysses, its character-portrayal, internalized and fragmented plot, con-structivist structural pattern, and the peculiar genre disintegrating the traditional form of the realist novel.
Two chapters are devoted to Th. Mann's Der Zciuberberg and Lotte in Weimar. Special emphasis is laid on the Mannian use of the interior monologue, time-technique and dreams and visions. The similarities between the arts of Joyce and Mann originate from certain comparable experiences inherent in the historical, social and intellectual climate of the age,... Tovább

The author's aim has been to characterize and relate the concepts of avantgardism and modernity by comparing James Joyce's Ulysses with Thomas Mann's Der Zciuberberg and Lotte in Weimar.
