Peers, with such a central role in Western adolescence, play a comparatively minor role in the lives of Arabic and South Asian adolescents. Emotional turmoil and individuation from family occur in somé societies but not others. Adolescent sexual revolutions are sweeping through Japan and Latin America. In this book, scholars from eight regions of the world describe the distinct nature of adolescence in their regions. They draw on research to address standard topics regarding this age - family and peer relationships, schooling, preparation for work, physical and mentái health - and show how these have a different cast across societies. B. Bradford Brown is Professor of Humán Development and former Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of WisconsinMadison. He received an A.B. in sociology from Princeton University and Ph.D. in humán development from the University of Chicago before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1979. Reed W. Larson is Professor of Humán and Community Development in the Departments of Humán and Community Development, Psychology, and Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is author of Divergent Realities: The Emotional Lives ofMothers, Fathers, and Adolescents'iwith Maryse Richards) and of Being Adolescent: Conflictand Growth in the Teenage Years (with Mihály Csikszentmihalyi). T. S. Saraswathi is Professor Emeritus of Humán Development in the Humán Development and Family Studies at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. She is a recipient of numerous professional awards and international fellowships for her contributions to the field of developmental psychology and has published several articles in reputed journals and edited books.
