Bahá'í Shrine and Gardens
Mount Carmel, Haifa
Situated along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea hugging the Carmel mountain range, Haifa, gateway to the north of Israel, is home to the majestic golden-domed Shrine of the Báb surrounded by spectacular terraced gardens. Designed by a distinguished Canadian architect, William Sutherland Maxwell, the Shrine was completed in 1953. Its structure is a marvellous blend of eastern and western styles. The granite columns proclaim the glory of classic Roman architecture; the Corinthian capitals are reminiscent of ancient Greece, while the arches bring the flavour of the Orient.
The terraces of the Shrine of the Báb, embracing the steep slopes of Mount Carmel, were completed in December 2000. Designed by Canadian architect, Fariborz Sahba, the gardens have already gained international recognition and have been compared, among others, to the fabled hanging gardens of Babylon.
