The present attacks on the advances working peoples have achieved in social and welfare rights in Europe should be seen in their historical context, BALAZS NAGY argues. He points out that they were first won when capitalism in Europe was in severe difficulties. However, they have constantly been threatened by jealous capitalists and their governments and ^^ only maintained in persistent struggle. The social advances made (mainly) in the second half of the last century are not compatible in the long run with th^ continued existence of capitalism, Nagy maintains. Greece is now a test-bed for class attacks on working people which are being rolled out across the continent. Only a genuinely continent-wide movement, Nagy explains, will be able to parry and push back these attacks, which arise from the crisis of capitalist economy, itself now an excuse for "disaster capitalism" to pursue its own ends. Only a genuinely continent-wide movement, Nagy explains, will be able to parry and push back these attacks, which arise from the crisis of capitalist economy, itself now an excuse for "disaster capitalism" to pursue its own ends. Nagy pinpoints the disastrous role of the European Union and its institutions in these attacks, but emphasises that narrow national isolation is a blind alley. A truly continent-wide movement of working people is essential, he argues, in order to place a "Working Peoples' Europe" at the forefront of political action.
