THE ORIBATID GENERA OF THE WORLD

Oribatid mites are the most frequent animals in the mezo-fauna of the different kinds of soil. Consequently, it is assumed that their importance is much greater than we nowadays realize in the material and energy turn-over as well as in the decompo-sition of organic matter. These animals are excellent biological indicators, too. This is one of the reasons why many soil zoologists tnrn increasing attention to this group of Arthropods. In the last decade the number of described genera of Oribatid mites rose to 700 which makes the material almost unsurveyable. So there had long been a demand for a work to elucidate the taxonomy of the group. The present work some-what digresses from contemporary endeavours for besides containing the traditional presentation of the keys it gives code tables in which the most important 6 — 10 charac-teristics of the genus are coded by numbers providing easy survey.
