The Armory Show, held in New York in 1913, closed one epoch and opened another, confronting American artists with the challenge of European modernism. The conflict which then began between native American realism and the imported styles of the European modernists continued throughout the twenties and thirties. The Armory Show, held in New York in 1913, closed one epoch and opened another, confronting American artists with the challenge of European modernism. The conflict which then began between native American realism and the imported styles of the European modernists continued throughout the twenties and thirties. What was left for American artists to learn from Europeans was assimilated during World War II, when many of Europe's leading painters and sculptors fled the Nazis for the safety of America. Their presence shifted the center of world art from Paris to New York. Although no one could have foreseen such an outcome, the mixture of American Scene painting with Cubism and Surrealism gave rise to the greatest style in the second half of the twentieth century. Abstract Expressionism, and the subsequent course of American art has been marked by a dazzling succession of unpredictable inventions and innovations.
Barbara Rose has taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Yale University, and the University of California. For her authoritative work as an art critic she has twice received the Mather Prize awarded by the College Art Association. Among her publications are monographs on Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler, Claes Oldenburg, and Patrick Henry Bruce. As a curator at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, she organized many exhibitions of American and European artists.
