Jtiuropean faience had its last flourishing period in the i8th century, at the time when two important factories began to appear with their products inside the one-time territory of Hungary. The factory of Holics owed its foundation to the industrial policy of the Hapsburg dynasty; the Tata factory, to the ambitions of a Hungárián nobleman at the middle of the century. The tricks of the craft kept secret in those days were brought here by French, Germán and Italian itinerant craftsmen, while the tastes of local patrons and masters created an art of peculiar local character. The influences of Strasbourg and Rouen, Castelli and the Chinese porcelain streaming into Europe were blended in a strange mixture with the elements of Central European rococo taste and the style of the age of Louis XVI, bringing into existence the ceramic products typical of the Holics and Tata factories.
