A city boy but always fascinated by nature, he was born in Brooklyn in 1917, was graduated from Columbia in 1937, received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in biology from Harvard. He has been, since 1947, on the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis and is now Director of its Center for the Biology of Natural Systems. He is noted for his pioneering studies of fimdamental problems on the physicochemical basis of biological process, has wiitten over 120 scientific papers, and is the recipient of innumerable academic honors.
