BASIC HORSEMANSHIP
English and Western
Eleanor F. Prince and Gaydell M. Collier
Foreword by William Steinkraus Preface by Richard A. Beck
The fundamental techniques of riding both English and Western styles are here set forth in a step-by-step guide for riders and instructors. The relationships and the differences in the two methods are clearly explained as the lessons proceed systematically from first mounting to intermediate levels and participation in competitive events.
With each lesson and subject, a suggested program and special tips are given for the instructor, so that the book is a handy guide for both pupils and teachers.
Jumping, showing, trail riding, and elementary levels of dressage are included. And there is practical information on care and feeding, grooming, equipment, traveling.
The illustrations — photographs and drawings — provide visual aids to the text, which is written in a clear, inviting manner. The approach throughout, while grounded on a sound knowledge of theory, is

on a personal, firsthand, what-to-do-now level, and is aimed at making riding a safe and enjoyable experience in all forms and circumstances for people of all ages.
As Richard Beck, managing editor of The Arabian Horse News, says in his Preface, "The ultimate goal of riding is to permit the completion of a task harmoniously by both horse and rider, whether the task be competing in a Grand Prix jump course or cutting cattle. The very same principles apply despite the differences in saddles or riding apparel." And William Steinkraus, Olympic Gold Medal winner and President of the U.S.E.T., concludes in his Foreword: "I could hardly be more sympathetic to the basic approach of this fine new book. I agree with Eleanor Prince and Gay Collier that it is not only possible, but advantageous, to learn and teach both English and Western riding more or less together, and I am certain that the rider who learns early in life to appreciate the broad common ground they share will already be much closer to understanding what riding is really all about. The authors are to be congratulated for presenting this sound yet novel thesis so sensibly and persuasively."
