In the lonely dawn of April 8th, 1940, alone and hopelessly out-gunned, hampered by storm damage and failing equipment, H.M.S. Glowworm made a superb running attack on units of the Germán fleet under the command of Vice-Admiral Helmuth Heye in his 10,000-ton cruiser, Adrhiral Hipper. With the last ounce of her energy the dying British destroyer rammed the Germán flag-ship causing irre-parable damage. Subsequently, Glowworm's Captain was post-humously awarded the Victoria Cross, it is believed for the first time in the history of the Royal Navy,on the recommendation of the enemy commander. Taking this half-forgotten naval action as the basis of his inspira-tion, Larry Forrester has written one of the most pötent anti-war novels ever to emerge from the death and carnage of World War II.
