Though not the largest, Ontario is the richest and most densely populated of Canada's provinces. To the north lies avast wilderness of lake-strewn tundra and forest land - an area that attracted the early fur trappers, prospectors, miners, loggers and farmers. Together they created new towns, mines and pulp mills and their processed resources were sent south to supply newly emerging industries.
In contrast to the north, south Ontario has rolling countryside, with apple orchards, dairy farms and extensive fields. Here too are the major towns and cities and ninety percent of the population. There is the bilingual city of Ottawa, one of the coldest capitals anywhere in the world, and Toronto, the provincial capital and commercicil heart of Canada.
