This select ion of letters is designed to give a comprehensive picture of Bai tok in all his many aspects the gi-eat musician, the musicologist, the mun of fierce and incorruptible integrity—through his own cori-espondence, in his own woT'ds.
The volume contains over half his known correspondence, 289 letters in all.
In addition to a wide selection from the three-volume edition of his letters published in Hungary, a number of isolated letters which have appeared in various publications are collected here, together with a number which are published for the first time.
The letters have been translated both from Hungarian and from the other languages—German, Rumanian, French—he used writing to his foreign correspondents, with the exception of English, which remains as he wrote it.
The volume contains twenty-three ])hotographs illustrating different stages and facets of his public and private life, and some seventy musical illustrations to the text.

The [Kirticular vaJue that is attached to musical education in Hnngary, and the whole system of ]uusicaJ instruction that has ^rown up to meet it over the past twenty years, has attracted considerable attention in the rest oi' the musical world, and the num-I)er of educationalists, music teachers and indeed members of the lay public who are interested in obtaining a closer insight into its workings is steadily increasing.
'Musical Education in Hungary' gives a comprehensive, systematic and detailed picture of the whole structure of musical education in Hungary, from nursery school including both general musical instruction and the special 'music schools' and 'conservatories' and the Academy of Music. There are chapters on the role of folk music, teacher training, sol-fa teaching, and a wealth of information on methods and material.
The book has been edited by Frigyes Sándoi', Professor of the Buda])est Academy of Music, with an introduction by Zoltán Kodály, and the various chapters have been w^i-itten by specialists.
The accumulated teaching experience which has gone into making the book should add to its great practical value for the musical teaching profession, as well as to its great interest for the i)ublic as a whole.
