BEOWULF
With the Finnesburg Fragment
3rd Edition
The edition of Beowulf b)i the late Professor C. L Wrenn, Emeritus Professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford, was published in 1953, and a second, revised and enlarged edition was produced in 1958, which was reprinted six times. It has now been entirely revised and brought up to date in the light of modern scholarship (i.e., for the period since 1958) by Professor W. F. Bolton, Head of the English Department at Douglass College, Rutgers University, New Jersey.

F. Professor Bolton stresses in his Preface to this new edition that all the main features of the previous edition have been preserved. Textual conservatism is one of the chief of these. There have, however, been some important changes. About a third of the Introduction is new; the main outlines of Wrenn's original have been preserved, but there has been some rearrangement, new material has been added on style, structure, metre, etc., and some older material has been excised. The Commentary has been compressed somewhat and removed from its place at the back of the book to the appropriate text pages. It is felt that this will make for quicker reference.
Of the original edition. The Times Literary Supplement wrote, 'Wrenn achieves his purpose and presents an edition which will be of great help to the student', and The Times Educational Supplement spoke of a 'thoroughgoing overhaul of the text and reassessment of the problems associated with it'. It added that this edition was 'meant primarily for the use of undergraduates', but was also 'indispensable for advanced scholars', and that it gave a 'succinct, lucid, and scholarly survey of the most significant recent research'.
