Paintings from The Frick Colkction offers I2i masterpieces in lull color—from early Renaissance devotional pieces to works by the Impressionists. Numerous dramatic details invite readers and viewers to augment their appreciation by examining the elements of artistry that distinguish one painting and painter from another Each color plate is accompanied by a brief biographical sketch of the artist and an illuminating commentary. Moreover, in a spectacular series of three- and four-page foldouts, a trio of the Collection's most celebrated paintings—Bellini's St. Francis in the Desert, Rembrandt's Polish Rider, and Claude Lorrain's Sermon on the Mount—are given their visual due. Finally, a superb eight-page gatefold has been devised to display Fragonard's Progress of Love series in its entirety.
The book opens with an introduction by Charles Ryskamp, the Director of The Frick Collection, that places in perspective the history of the museum and its contents. The commentaries on the color plates were written by Edgar Munhall, the Curator, together with Bemice Davidson, Research Curator, and Nadia Tschemy, Assistant Curator.
