The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "techne-tronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems.
The book is divided into five major parts. The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "techne-tronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems.
The book is divided into five major parts. The first describes the impact of the scientific-technological revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminator, the United States. The second part examines how this has affected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. The third assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. The fourth part focuses on the United States, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition—as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. The final section outlines in broad terms the general direction that the United States might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas.

ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI is the director of the Research Institute on Communist Affairs and Professor of Government at Columbia University. From 1966 to 1968 he served as a member of the Policy Planning Council in the Department of State in Washington. During 1968 he was the foreign-policy adviser to the Humphrey campaign. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1969. He has written many works and is the author, with Samuel P. Huntington, of Political Power: USA/USSR.
