Theology today can mean anything from reverence for the living God to the proposition that God is dead. How has the 'science of thinking about God' reached this dilemma?
The Pelican Guide to Modern Theology, which is under the general editorship of Professor R. P. C. Hanson, discusses the outlook of modern Christian thinkers and their attitude to the work of past theologians. Its three volumes, which examine the very foundations of Christianity in such questions as 'What and how is God?', cover the philosophy of religion, historical theology, and the study of the Bible: they help to explain why, even in these secular days, some people find theology the most attractive, exacting and satisfying intellectual pursuit of all.

The first two volumes are already available in Pelicans.
In the third volume two theologians closely survey the results of modern study of the Old and New Testaments. They show how the Bible, after more than a century of critical and historical analysis, still retains a central literary position within the Christian Church but can no longer be accorded the inerrant authority of the word of God. To many laymen, however, it may still be 'news' that Moses cannot have written the Pentateuch himself; that Hebrew prophets were politicians rather than heralds of the Christ; and that the Jesus of history probably differed greatly from the Jesus of the Church's faith. Neither history, linguistics, nor archaeology, however, have been able to settle every problem, and this volume introduces the reader to a modern 'Bible industry'of unprecedented activity.
