BIG SUR
AND
MONTEREY PENINSULA
A PICTURE BOOK TO REMEMBER HER BY
In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino, a Spanish sea merchant, sailed round a rugged peninsula on the Pacific coast into a calm bay. Captivated by its beauty, he named it Monterey as a mark of respect to the Mexican governor, the Count of Monte Rey.
By the beginning of the 19th century, several missions had been established and growing quickly in size and importance, Monterey became California's leading city.
With the discovery of gold in nearby San Francisco in 1848, Monterey lost some of its national status but the surrounding sea, packed with sardines, soon gave it a name as a successful fishing port. Mysteriously, the sardines vanished from the bay in the late 1940s and Monterey's interest turned to the many visitors attracted by its historic connotations and natural splendour.
Today, a favourite spot for artists, writers and craftsmen, Monterey has changed gracefully to suit modern times. Much of the land is given over to state trust and coastal roads connect the towns of Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur past breathtaking views and florid woodland.
The superb collection of colour photographs in this book capture perfectly the magnetic qualities of Monterey that drew the first settlers to its shores. Vissza
