Audretsch The growth of small units of employment in the latter part of the twentieth century is an issue of significant importance since it appears to signal the reversal of a one-hundred-year trend towards larger firms. This trend does not appear to be country specific (evidence is found in the UK, USA, Japan, and Germany, as well as in Eastern Europe) and has been identified at both the enterprise and establishment levels, as well as for the self employed. Despite the increased importance of small firms and their growing contribution to advanced economies, most of the literature in economics and business concerned with firm size has focused on large firms. This book examines the increasing importance of small firms in an international context.
