BONNARD
by Raymond Cogniat
This study by Raymond Cogniat (author of Dufy and Chagall in this series) is not so much a biography of Bonnard, as it is a means of grasping Bonnard's work through the key provided by his manner of life, his clearly defined rich and decadent social milieu. It becomes clear, on approaching Bonnard in this fashion, that his art — which seems transparently simple and even superficial — is profoundly complex. Cogniat speaks wisely in his text of, " The rich and secret density of those lives in which nothing happens because the person says nothing, lets the world see nothing of what fills his days and his mind. " One learn nothing of apparently simple things by seeing only the superficial " " In Bonnard are incarnated the dazzle of a dying society, the perfection and the richness of decadent art, whose corruptions almost seem to be promises for the future. But, in fact, this art is an end, not a beginning, by virtue of its very perfection."
" The glowing calm and lethargy that impregnate all the work of Bonnard answers to a profound human response, to an interior richness that has no need of mechanical subterfuges, brilliant or demanding, in order to eflface the nothingness of empty time, or in order to be moved by the presence of man."
