Villány - Dedication to At|a$
The two greatest wine regions of Hungary are polar opposites: Tokaj the northernmost In the country, Villany the southernmost; Tokaj the ultimate expression of white grapes, Villany the deep red that every wine drinker needs.
1f Hungary's historical wines are predominantly white Is largely a function of latitude - the same as northern France. In French terms Tokaj is Champagne, Villany on a level with Lyon. You cannot push the comparison too far: a continental climate of extremes is very different from the soft Atlantic influence felt by France. Villany has the summer temperatures, the long seasons, the soils and the traditions of a region dedicated to firm, rich, long-maturing reds. Like all Hungarian traditions of quality it has been sorely tried. In the past 20 years, though, a new generation of determined indigenous wine-growers have opened their minds to ideas from round the world. Villany today is as much New World as Old: a fusion of new methods and old experience that offers the best red wines of Central Europe. It is time to look in detail at a region With an exciting future.
In this atlas Erno Peter Botqls sets out the parameters of modern Villany with all the experience of the director of Hungary's wine research institute. From his headquarters at Kecskemet he has followed the rediscovery of what has given Villany its centuries-old reputation, in this book he interprets it for a new generation of appreciative wine drinkers.
