ForewordIn a long novel absolute adherence to matters of period would,
- I think, prove tiresome to the reader. Therefore, while endeavour-
ing to portray faithfully the costumes, manners, and ways of the latter
half of the sixteenth century, I have avoided the somewhat formal
dialogue of Elizabethan times, and have ventured to express myself
throughout in simple language, avoiding colloquialisms and peasant and
county dialects. I have also used the form of a name most familiar to
modern readers. For instance, Falmouth was Smithwick in Tudor days,
but, as it seemed to me that the use of the old name would only tend to
be confusing, I have used the later form.

The Rise of the Dutch Republic; A. L. Rowse, Tudor Cornwall; Claridge,
