From the Jurassic Coast of Dorset to the Bristol Channel, south-west England has glorious scenery, ranging from the rural tranquillity of Devon to the rugged coves of Cornwall. This region has a strong maritime history and includes Dartmouth where all officers of the Royal Navy are trained.
Wide open skies, reed-fringed marshes and magnificent beaches characterise the coasthne of East Anglia. Hidden away in the estuaries and creeks of Essex are a handful of glorious towns and villages, which include Maldon and Tollesbury. Further north are some of the best seaside resorts in Britain, including Aldeburgh and Southwold.
The Yorkshire coast has a craggy grandeur. The North Yorkshire Heritage Coast forms the eastern edge of the North York Moors national park and includes Staithes, Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. Further south the magnificent resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington are close to the cliffs of Flamborough Head and Bempton.
The coastline of the north-east Includes the estuaries of the rivers Tyne, Wear and Tees together with the beautiful coastline of Northumberland where the stunning castles of Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh look out over the North Sea.
More than two-thirds of the British coastline is located in Scotland and its offshore islands. This coastline is blessed with awesome natural features including chffs, stacks, coves and promontories, guarded by magnificent castles and graced with characterful fishing villages. In Northern Ireland the Antrim Coast Road regularly features in lists of the best-loved scenery in the British Isles. For much of its length it is flanked by towering cliffs intersected with wooded valleys.
North-west England takes in the bright lights of Blackpool, the Mersey Docks, the sands of Cumbria and the rocky coastline of the Isle of Man. From Merseyside, the north coast of Wales is clearly visible with the popular seaside resorts of Llandudno, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay as well as the fortified towns of Caernarfon and Conwy. To the west lie the remote and historic centres of Harlech and St Davids, and to the south the beauties of Pembrokeshire and the Gower Peninsula.
