About this book
Like Bruce Dawe's selection, Condolences of the Season (1971), his collected poems, Sometimes Gladness (1978), has become a recognised best seller, widely set throughout Australia as a secondary and tertiary level text.
This third edition of Sometimes Gladness brings Bruce Dawe's work up to date. It includes the best of the new poems written between 1978 and 1987, and while some earlier work has been omitted, all of those many poems which have established Dawe's unique reputation have been retained. The poems are now arranged in chronological order, an index of themes has been added, and the index of forms has again been included. Also available is a cassette tape of the poet reading and commenting on a selection of the poems from this edition, including some of the latest work.
Bruce Dawe continues to write with those qualities of feeling, intelligence, and humour which have brought him such widespread critical acclaim.

Some critical opinions
'. . .the poetry of Bruce Dawe will last and be assured of a lasting pubHc.' (Bruce Beaver, the Age)
' his value as a poet lies in his wide interests, his compassion, his sharp eye for the way we so often fall below the best that we could be . . . his way of bringing into verse the language and rhythms of Australian speech. And not least, his humour . . .' (Philip Martin, the Sydney Morning Herald)
'Bruce Dawe is the quintessential Australian poet, at least if we may compliment ourselves that we share his integrity and courage, as well as his ironic wit and his cool voice . . . This volume deserves to be a best seller.' (Geoffrey Dutton, the Bulletin)
'He is surely one of the best three or four poets we have had in this country.' (Les Murray, the Sydney Morning Herald)
