Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked — just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.

Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.
pieter Bruegel has left us fewer than fifty paintings, and many of his drawings have been lost or destroyed, but there is no doubt that he was one of the great geniuses of sixteenth-century painting. Sadly, little is known about his life, the main source being one rather questionable biography by Karéi Van Mander published thirty-five years after his death. Van Mander portrays him as a droll figure, and his old nickname was "peasant Bruegel," but this is at odds with contemporary documents, which show him to have been a cultured and educated man who was connected with a highly intellectual circle in Antwerp.
As a landscape painter Bruegel has had few equals before or since. Paintings such as The Com Harvest or the well-known Hunters in ike Snow reveal an awe-inspiring blend of technical skill, keen observation and profound knowledge of nature. Equally fine, if less widely known, are religious paintings such as The Procession to Calvary, panoramic scenes crowded with exquisitely described figures, each one of which tells a story. Many of Bruegel's paintings have a strong element of social and political satire; some seem to relate to the religious persecutions of the time, and there are probably moral messages even in the scenes of peasant life that gave Bruegel his nickname. We cannot be sure of these hidden meanings, but this in no way inhibits our enjoyment of Bruegel's marvellous paintings or our admiration for his breathtaking skill. Vissza
