The main theme of the book is that a number of possible heritages can be shaped from the European past depending on the purposes for which they are intended. Through different methods of management intervention, heritage can flilfil a variety of functions, becoming a major commercial resource in the form of the tourism industry, or enlisted in the creation and maintenance of place identities.
Leading contributors look at different perceptions of heritage by different cultures, and the social and political consequences of heritage planning. The nature of heritage planning for emerging, spatially fragmented state structures is also discussed.
The important question is raised of whether, through deliberate intervention, heritage will be employed in the shaping of a specifically European heritage interpretation.
Forward looking, this volume serves to identify the nature and scale of the European heritage problem and should be seen as an excellent bench-mark for future research. It will appeal to those within the growing field of heritage management, and to students and researchers in the fields of planning, tourism and cultural geography.

A NEW HERITAGE FOR A NEW EUROPE?
How can the past be transformed into the modern heritage product? This edited volume shows the many contemporary uses of heritage, ranging from its use in the creation and maintenance of place identities to heritage as a modern commercial resource for tourism development. Leading contributors argue that while traditionally the concept of the nation state has been underpinned by a national heritage, an integrated Europe needs a specifically European heritage interpretation. This raises the possibility of management intervention to enlist the support of the past in the shaping of the future.
