The name of Alice V. Bank (1906-1984), Doctor of History and an eminent authority on Byzantine art and culture, is familiar to and highly esteemed by art scholars the world over. Fifty-three years of her life were spent at the Hermitage - over half a century of devoted work at the Section of Byzantium and Near East which she headed till the end of her life. She was responsible for the permanent exhibition of Byzantine art at the Hermitage as well as for the loan exhibitions held at different times in London, Edinburgh and Berlin.
A museum expert of the highest order, Alice V. Bank kept up an active correspondence with her colleagues abroad, thus contributing to the Hermitage's contacts with other museums of the world. She gave lectures at Ravenna, Belgrade, Vienna and Geneva and took part in many international conferences on Byzantine art.
