Role of Fertilizers in Sustainable Agriculture
The second part of the last century, witnessed countless improvements in crop technology and the yields increased considerably. By increasing the yield per unit area, the nutrient mining removed by the harvested crops, represents an alarming process, particularly when fertilizer consumption, mainly in last decade, decreased significantly.
Fertilizers play and will further play a great role in maintaining or increasing soil fertility, crop productivity and meeting the increasing food demand for the growing world population. When fertilizers are utilized in accrodance with soil fertility status, ecological conditions and nutrients crop demands, the negative effect on the environment will decrease to a minimum or will even be eliminated.

Fertilizer research and fertilization represent an important issue in diminishing the unproductive consumption of fertilizers without reducing the level of yield and profit. Research oriented towards increasing the utilization coeeficient of nutrients derived for the fertilizers by crops and causing nutrient losses in the environment, guides to important adaptation in actual technologies for a sustainable development.
The papers published in the Proceedings of the 12* International CIEC Symposium provide the latest detailed information and achievements on fertilizers research, development and application, as one of the most important tools for sustaining and increasing soil fertility and crop productivity; a leading factor for a sustainable performance agriculture.
