C. P. Snow conceived the plan for the Strangers and Brothers sequence in 1935 and the first novel appeared in 1940. The publication in 1970 of Last Things is an important Hterary event.

Born in Leicester, England, in 1905, C. P. Snow was educated at Leicester University College and then at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he held a Fellowship in physics and later became Tutor. His first published work was scientific papers, particularly on infra-red investigation of molecular structures. His serious career as a novelist (always his intention) began in 1934 with the publication of The Search.
At the outbreak of World War II, C. P. Snow entered public affairs; and for his services—as adviser on scientific personnel to the Ministry of Labour and afterwards as a Civil Service Commissioner—he was knighted in 1957. In 1964 he became Lord Snow and served in the government as Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Technology; but he has now retired from public life to give his full time to writing. C. P. Snow's international reputation for the Strangers and Brothers novels has been augmented by his lectures and essays on science, government, and the two cultures.
C. P. Snow is married to the novelist Pamela Hansford Johnson, and they have a son, Philip.
