CANYON COUNTRY
Photography by Dewitt Jones Text by Stephen Trimble
Canyon Country Is a bold, dramatic American landscape. Tons of rocks are suspended mid-air in massive, yet graceful, arches; sandstone spires and hoodoos dot the land; wild rivers carve chasms of unimaginable intricacy. By day, red-orange cliffs rise against stark-blue skies. By night, the sandstone cools, shadows deepen, and stars punctuate the darkness.
This is the Colorado Plateau. It begins where the Colorado River leaves the Rocky Mountains and ends just before the river flows into Nevada's Lake Mead. In between, sprawling across the Four Corners states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, lies a world of spectacular beauty and complexity.
The canyons are the heart of this world. Carved by the waters of the Colorado River and its network of tributaries, they hold within their stratified walls a record of more than a billion and a half years of geologic history. It Is a history of cataclysms and... Tovább

It Is a history of cataclysms and constancy, of inland seas and windy deserts, of dinosaurs and cave dwellers.
CANYON COUNTRY Is the story of a great landscape which dominates resident and visitor Native Americans first called this country of canyons and mesas home. Early Spanish explorers and American pioneers were confounded by its Immense scale. Settlers found the land challenging, and even today Canyon Country remains sparsely Inhabited, a powerful force and Inspiration for all who view it.
A constellation of remarkable national parks, national monuments, and state parks provides the greatest concentration of protected lands outside of Alaska. The names are familiar: Zion, Bryce, Arches, Dinosaur, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Monument Valley. From Colorado National Monument to the Grand Canyon, each location offers the visitor a different perspective of this varied and fascinating land.
Among the sandstone cliffs and sllckrock canyons, the forested mountains and river rapids, Canyon Country holds a special lure for photographer Dewitt lones. His photographs transmit this landscape with astounding sensitivity from the early morning light's caress of Delicate Arch to the mighty roaring rapids of the Grand Canyon. CANYON COUNTRY is the work of a superb master landscape photographer.
Stephen Trimble matches the mood of these images In his eloquent accompanying text. He writes with a reverence and understanding of the Canyon Country that can come only from a lifetime of being part of It. His stories are as revealing as the strata of the canyon walls.
In Canyon Country, say the Navajo, Father Sky meets Mother Earth; here the two match in scale and are complementary. A similar statement applies to the photographs and words in this book. They come together In a balance—a balance celebrated each day In the Navajo prayer that ends "From all around me beauty has been restored." Vissza
