The city of today is the product of a long and fascinating history. There had been a city on the River Thames since the Roman foundation of Londinium, and it was to develop largely within the Roman walls until the Great Fire of 1666, and the terrible destruction it wrought: the relentless growth of the city, swallowing countless villages, into the surrounding countryside dates from that catastrophe. To a 20th-century Londoner, however, the Georgian city of 200 years ago would still have seemed a delightfully rustic place, surrounded by villages, fields and market gardens. The Industrial Revolution and the growth of the British empire changed all that. In the 19th century vast influxes of people, the massive expansion of the docks, the coming of the railways and speculative building booms all transformed the city into the great metropolis we know today.
Through over 300 maps and illustrations, the London History Atlas traces the growth of the city from Roman times to the present day. Unique detailed reconstructions recreate the city as it once was, while photographs, paintings and maps tell the complex story of London and the people and events which have shaped it over the centuries.
Edited by Professor Hugh Clout, of University College London, the London History Atlas has been compiled by a team of over 20 archaeologists, historians and geographers. Maps and illustrations are accompanied by a concise and lucid narrative. An etymology of London's street names, full chronology of the city and a comprehensive historical index all make this book an invaluable companion to the Londoner and the lover of London. Vissza
