findings from Britain's first safe house
Cathy Newman
Although there is more awareness of the pressures on young people today, very little information is available on young runaways. No national statistics are available, so no one knows how many young people run away or why they run. There is no co-ordination of services so no coherent response to the needs of runaways.
The Children's Society was founded in 1881 in response to the needs of two young children on the streets of London and it decided, in its centenary year, to investigate the contemporary needs of the young homeless. The investigations showed not only the paucity of information but also the gap in provision for young runaways.

The Children's Society was founded in 1881 in response to the needs of two young children on the streets of London and it decided, in its centenary year, to investigate the contemporary needs of the young homeless. The investigations showed not only the paucity of information but also the gap in provision for young runaways.
After discussion with other voluntary agencies working with young people in London, The Children's Society opened Britain's first safe house for young runaways — the Central London Teenage Project - in June 1985. The project offered the young people time and support at a confidential address to work out why they had run away and what options were open to them. An integral part of the work of the safe house was a research project.
Young Runaways is based on the findings of that research. It gives detailed information on the 532 young people seen by the safe house during its first two years of operation. It outlines where they had run from and why, what happened to them when they left the project, and what they thought of the project's work. The practice of the project and the response from parents and carers are discussed, but Young Runaways also highlights the extent of the problem in the United Kingdom and raises several issues about existing provision for young people.
Cathy Newman was the research worker at the Central London Teenage Project for 4Vi years. She has worked with the young single homeless for the past eight years. Vissza
