VTINGATE'S RAIDERS
An sccount of the first ejcpedltion of the Chindits, -who infiltrated into Burma and beat the Japanese at their own game of jungi» warfare. Compiled from confidential records, and the first-hand reports of Major John B. Jefferies and Squadron-Leader Piohert Thompson, two of Wingate's senior officers.
Had it not been for Viscount Wavell's flair for selecting the right man the seemingly mad and impossible feat of conducting irregular activities behind the Japanese lines in Burma in 19+2 would never have been undertaken. As it was, Orde Charles Wingate's eccentric genius and brilliant organisation achieved the impossible, and his few hundred Chindits—ragged, exhausted and suffering—returned to Imphal having traversed over one thousand miles of dense jungle, crossed high mountain ranges and deep rivers, and thoroughly worsted the Japanese army.

The men of this ghost array that the enemy could never bring to battle were not seasoned troops: they were from the cities and factories of Britain, whom Wingate had trained in India for their fantastic adventure. These were the men, together with some contingents of the Burma Rifles, who destroyed the communication life-lines of the Japanese in Biu-ma, and so disorganised their Occupation that they lost face in the eyes of the natives. The expedition also demonstrated the power of „The Government" to return again, and raised bands of Burmese patriots to fight with the Allies. Further important results were that the pressure on the Chinese to the east was relieved, and a threatened invasion of India was staved off.
The Chindits were divided Into independent columns. "The columns were self-con-tained units capable of operating at considerable distances from one another and of assembling quickly at one point for a big attack. Each column had its wireless set and R. A.F. ofticer, who was responsible for the supply-droppings, and a small group of demolition experts. Wingate's own column . . . was the brains and guiding hand of the expedition." The raiders penetrated to within less than one hundred miles of the Burma Road.
In this Enlarged Edition new chapters tell of the Second Wingate Expedition in the early month of 1944-. Organised on a far bigger scale than the first raid of the Chindits, and drawing fully on the experience gained and the lessons learned the previous year, the incursion of 1944 achieved results that set the field for the final expulsion of the Japanese from Burma. The enemy's main communications were cut, his loudly propagandized raid Imphal and Kohima was turned into a rout. Perfect co-operation was achieved between Colonel Cochrane's Air Commando force''and the British striking force. And, just as success was assured, the tragedy of Brigadier Orde Wingate's sudden death had its impact on every fighting man in Burma.
