Charles Phillips is the author of The Heritage of the American West and senior editor of the forthcoming four-volume Encyclopedia of the American West. He has served as editor of Higher Education and National Affairs for the American Council on Education, of History News for the American Association for State and Local History, and on the staffs of Congressional Quarterly and the Washington Star. He has taught at the University of Iowa.
Alan AxeLROD is the author of Chronicle of the Indian Wars: From Colonial Times to Wounded Knee, The War Between the Spies: A History of Espionage During the Civil War, and The Art of the Golden West, which was Booklist's "Editor's Choice" in 1990 and won the National Cowboy Hall of Fame Western Heritage Award in 1991. Axelrod holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and has taught at Lake Forest University and Furman University.
