Man-Machine Communication
By CHARLES T. MEADOW
A volume in the Wiley Information Science Series
Edited by
R. M. Hayes and J. Becker
Man-machine communication in-volves a mutual exchange of infor-mation between two systems, each of which enjoys somé independence of action. One is capable of creative thinking and high-speed correla-tion, but is slow at calculation, read-ing and writing, and is error-prone. The other has limited intellectual power but is capable of split-second calculation, reading and writing, and rarely makes mistakes. The critical demand for improved information systems would be alleviated if effec-tive communication between these two disparate organisms were re-solved to yield better results than either participant could produce in-dependently. The intent of this book is to stimulate further development in this vitai area.
Divided into three sections, Man-Machine Communication surveys the basic elements of man-computer symbiosis. Part 1 covers the basic aspects of interactive systems: the hardware, or mechanical devices used in man-machine communication; computer programming; computer time-sharing; and natural lan-guage processing. Part II contains basic systems that are fully interac-
