Charlotte Bronte
The Professor Emma a fragment
Introduction by Anne Smith
Although it was never published in her lifetime, The Professor was Charlotte Bronte's first novel, written two years after she had returned from her stay in Brussels as a pupil-teacher at the pensionnat of Madame Heger. While in Brussels she had fallen hopelessly in love with Professor Heger, and when she returned to England, heartsick, she found that her and her sisters' prospectus for a boarding-school at the parsonage had elicited no interested enquiries. They then set themselves to write novels, hoping to earn their living by their pens and thus avoid the hated alternative of governess-work. When several publishers turned down The Professor as being too low-key, Charlotte pushed on with Jane Eyre, which brought her success and fame. But The Professor remained a favourite with her all her life, and she never gave up hope of seeing it in print.

But The Professor remained a favourite with her all her life, and she never gave up hope of seeing it in print.
This volume also includes the first two chapters of her unfinished last novel, Emma, which show something of the humorous, mature and socially aware novelist Charlotte Bronte had become.
