The study of chemical evolution is based on the assumption that life appeared on the earth's surface as a result of the normal operation of physical and chemical laws. This implies that there was a period in the earth's history that encompassed the transition between nonliving molecules and a population of molecular aggregates that we should call "living." In this book two approaches are used in the attempt to determine the nature of this interface and transition. The first, molecular paleontology, is the view backwards into the historical record; the second is the construction of hypothetical chemical models that could have given rise to living organisms. This book derives from a series of lectures delivered by Professor Calvin as George Eastman Visiting Professor at Oxford University.

THE AUTHOR
Melvin Calvin is Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics, and Associate Director of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Calvin was awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1961. Vissza
