The symposium held on the Chemotherapy of Cancer in Lugano, Switzerland in April 1964, and organized by the Swiss Academy of Sciences, served a two-fold purpose in presenting a complete picture of modern research and development in the chemotherapy of cancer, whilst at the same time providing a welcome opportunity to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of that internationally respected scientist Piacidus A. Plattner. Attending the symposium were specially invited research workers from Europe and the United States, representing a toplevel cross section of both the clinical and experimentál aspects of all the important disciplines concerned with the chemotherapy of cancer. The restricted size of the gathering made for an atmosphere most conducive to extremely advanced probing into the problems facing the scientist in this field.
