AMERICAN PHOTO ALBUM
CHICAGO
Chicago is where the action is. It may be the third largest metropolitan area in the country, but it also has the nation's tallest building — the Sears Tower. Never mind that in 1871 Mrs. O'Leary's cow was supposed to have kicked over a lantern starting a fire that burned down four square miles of downtown Chicago. Today, Chicago is home for some of the most stunningly beautiful buildings in the world. She is truly the architectural mecca of modern day America, with a skyline that is unique and arresting, literally peppered with daring concepts and structural monuments to all that is exciting in contemporary high-rise design.
Here is the real heartland of America — innovative, original and as independent of outside influence as only a city can be that looks to both east and west for its roots.
A city of many museums, it's most important works of art are right out on the street for people to see as a part of their everyday life. Chicago's plaza art is justifiably acclaimed around the world. Since 1967 the famous Picasso sculpture at the Richard J. Daley Plaza has been a landmark; now there Is Alexander Gaidar's bright red Flamingo, a 53-foot-high sculpture at the Federal Center, as well as a new Calder mobile in the lobby of the Sears Tower. At the corner of Monroe and Dearborn Streets is a new mosaic by Marc Chagall; 70 feet long composed of glass, marble, stone and granite, out where it should be, on the street, a living part of the city.
This book captures the feeling and the spirit of the fascinating bustling lively metropolis which has given us such a diverse array of cultural heritage. Forget Capone, prohibition is over. Forget Mrs. O'Leary's cow, it's all been rebuilt. This is the city where Lincoln was nominated, where jazz set its own tone and style. This is the city where Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow has preferred to live. This is where Carl Sandburg gave us the message of America — The people, yes.
That's what this new American Photo Album Chicago is all about. Vissza
