This new anthology brings together some of the finest East European poets of the post-war generation, most of them never previously published in english.
From the delicate meditations of Poland's Ryszard Krynicki to
the more robust realism of bulgarian boyko lambovski, child
of Europe draws a new landscape of eleven European states
currently undergoing political upheaval. many of the poets have suffered at the hands of the authorities for their views: they discuss the fragility of freedom, the act of writing, the immortality or transience of poetry. above all, by faithfully rendering their distinctive vision of home life, each being part of 'the banner of my time or a shred of its banner', they are striving to replace history with poetry.
