CHIPPENDALE
NATHANIEL HARRIS
This book is the first popular study of England's most famous furniture maker and craftsman.
Thomas Chippendale has often been called the 'Shakespeare' of English cabinetmakers: his working years, the third quarter of the 18th century, were a golden age of English furniture and craftsmanship. In 1754 he published The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, an imposing and ambitious furniture pattern book, which established his name and led to lucrative commissions from the aristocracy. Chippendale furnished many of the grandest town and country houses of the day, including Nostell Priory and Harewood House in Yorkshire, and the country villa, near London, of David Garrick, the great actor-manager.
Superbly illustrated with reproductions of Chippendale's designs from the Director and colour pictures of some of his most famous pieces of furniture, Nathaniel Harris's new book is a splendid picture of 18th century life and the career of the master... Tovább
