COUNTRY LIFE PICTURE BOOK OF
COUNTRY HOUSES
This Picture Book of Country Houses is a variation on the Picture Book theme that Country Lifi? has been developing successfully for many years. Instead of covering a region of Britain, this aew addition to the series deals with a particularly British phenomenon, the country house. The author, John Cornforth, has chosen 105 photographs of houses and arranged them more or Iqs in chronological order, but he has not attempted to create a formal pictorial history. The iUustra--tions have been chosen for their pictorial as well as their architectural quahty. The houses range in date from the medieval fortified manor-house of Stokesa)^Castle to the painted decorations in the drawmg room at Mottisfont Abbey by the late Rex Whistler, but most of them were created in the 17th and i8th centuries, the heyday of country house architecture. A group of photographs of Georgian houses represent the tastes and interests of the nobility and gentry of that age. The fmal illustrations include views of two great bioildings by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
A number of the houses included in the book are not well known, but they are as much a part of the Enghsh scene as the grander ones. The idea of the book has been to suggest the rich variety of Enghsh houses and to illustrate some of the many facets that make them such an endlessly fascinating source of pleasure and subject of study.
