The Making of the 20th Century
'I have seen no better plan for providing materials for serious historical studies of the history of the twentieth century.' Alan Bullock
Somé press opinions of The Approach of War 1938-1939
'A brilliant narrative summary of the main political memoirs and collections of diplomatic documents A masterpiece of condensation, brilliantly but unobtrusively annotated, and an excellent introduction into the bargain.' - D. C. Watt, Spectator
'This particular subject is one which has become very confused since the publication of Mr. A. J. P. Taylor's controversial Origins of the Second Wor/d War. Mr. Thorne's book shows how the historian's skill can be used to sort out confusion involved. There could hardly be a better book with which to launch this very promising series.' - Alan Bullock

Considerable disagreement surrounds the hectic manoeuvres of European diplomacy on the eve of the Second World War; this clear and scholarly study is a vivid guide to these events, and to
recent important writing on the subject.
The first chapter surveys the European scene and the opportunities before Hitler; examines the motives and meaning of Western policies of 'appeasement'; and reassesses Hitler's intentions, methods and responsibility for the war in the light of recent, sometimes bittér, academic controversy.
Events are then traced from the Germán seizure of Austria to the outbreak of European War, with extensive extracts from diplomatic documents, diaries, eye-witnesses, and the press. Detailed references are supplied for specialists and there is a useful commentary on the bibliography, as well as a detailed chronological table and index.
The author, Christopher Thorne, who is the editor of this series, was born in 1934 and educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Guildford, and St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Having taught at St Paul's School, and at Charterhouse, where he was Senior History Master, he then became B.B.C. Radio's Head of Further Education. He is now Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex. Vissza
