A great debate is going on within the NATO alliance as to how best to use emerging technology to forge a true shield for the West, facing as it does in Furopc the massively armed forces of the Warsaw Pact. In 19X2 the IS Army adopted a new war lighting doctrine expressed in their !key field manual I'M 100-5, Operations, called 'AirLand Battle.' which allied advanced target acquisitions and command and control systems to a doctrine of offence to allow a 'deep battle' to be fought by land forces striking deep into the enemy's rear. Put simply AirLand Battle doctrine is the current way the US Army plans to light and win, using nuclear weapons if so sanctioned.

At the same time General Bernard Rogers, the Supreme Allied Commander Furope. launched a political initiative for the NATO nations to adopt a new sub concept of operations called 'Follow ()n Forces Attack' (FOFA), presented as a much longer term technological effort to develop so called 'smart' weapon systems able to 'strike deep' across Soviet and Warsaw Fact forces as a way of raising the threshold of dependence on first or early use of nuclear weapons on the battlefield.
Meanwhile the US Army has published a study called AirLand Battle 2000 which foresees the potential shape of combat in the next century with all the emerging technology now in place - robot systems, 'lire and forget' weapons, advanced electronic warfare and much else besides which would make today's soldier look more at home on the battlefield of Waterloo.
Thfs book lakes this extraordinary mix of high politics and high technology and makes it understandable.
