This new addition to the range of Oxford dictionaries meets the need for a compact, comprehensive, but inexpensive reference book on opera. There are over 3,000 entries covering composers, singers, conductors, librettists, synopses, details of first performances, characters in operas, the first lines of better-known arias, and the history of opera's development in most countries of the world. Technical and professional terms such as verismo, claque, coloratura, and tessitura are also explained .
Harold Rosenthal, formerly the official archivist at Covent Garden, is editor of Opera and has written and edited a number of books in the operatic field. John Warrack formerly worked in various opera companies as an orchestral player and is now the music critic of the Sunday Telegraph.
