The Fontana Economic History of Europe is the first comprehensive survey of the subject to make its originál appearance in paperback. Volumes 1 to 4 take the story up to the beginning of the twentieth century while volumes 5 and 6 cover the most recent period. The plan of the work, besides giving full weight to such traditional aspeds of the subject as population,agriculture, trade and fináncé,allows for the treatment of topics either too often neglected,such as demand, or unrecognised, such as the social and economic context of science and technology or the economic relation of society to its environment. This volume, which is published in Iwo parts, deaIs with the economic experience of individual countries during the fifty years from 1920. As in previous volumes account is taken of countries hitherto generally omitted from such a survey, such as Spain, Switzerland, the Nordic countries and those of Eastern Europe.
