Trade-signs were the distinguishing and beckoning emblems of inns, craftsmen and tradesmen. As a subject for research, they belong equally to cultural history, mercantile history, arts and crafts, and folk-art. André Csatkai, an established and widely respected authority on cultural history and art history introduces these romantic relics of old Hungárián crafts and trades in colourful, readable prose. He produces many fascinating facts about the mercantile life and advertising methods of traders and craftsmen, and of the customs which brought about these sometimes mysterious, hieroglyph-like shapes and forms which appear almost surrealistic today, removed as they are from their originál context; and he describes the process by which particular symbols evolved and developed.
