At dawn on 6 June 1944, the Allies launched the greatest amphibious assault of all time against the supposedly impregnable defenses of Hitler's Atlantic Wall. Allied preparations had been thorough and, although the Germán High Command was aware that an invasion had been planned, the generals were unsure of its objectives. Consequently, when Allied ships and aircraft heralded the start of Operation Overlord by saturating the Normandy beaches with tons of high explosive, the defenders were caught off guard. However, the first troops ashore had to tackle a tenacious enemy, one dug in behind extensive fortifications. The fighting was bittér and losses were heavy, especially on Omaha beach where the veterán fighters of the US Ist Infantry Division, 'The Big Red One,' took on the Germán 352nd Infantry Division. Despite almost insurmountable difficulties, the Allied forces had fought their way inland from the five invasion beaches by evening; six days later the British and US troops had linked up to create a continuous front somé 60 miles long. Brigadier Peter Young led 3 Commando during the landings and his personal experiences of this hard-fought battle add special interest to the account, which covers Allied planning, the initial airborne landings, the preliminary bombardment, and the fighting on the beaches. Illustrated with over 100 photographs and maps, D-Day reveals the complete story behind one of World War ll's most risky - and decisive - undertakings. Vissza
