"Ten of the eleven chapters in this book are of a speculative character and it is hoped that they will prove of interest not only to those who approach the subject for the first time, but also to those who already know something of the story of art. The book is dedicated to both classes of reader, and especially to the great mass of people who are not experts, but who have at one time or another been inspired by a work of art, and seek for further information as to the how and the wherefore.
Chapter eight is of a purely factual character, and has been included primarily for those who know but little of the actual history of European art. It offers a very brief summary of what has been done in the Western world since the beginning of the Christian era. It is hoped that it may stimulate its readers to further enquiry, and a short bibliography has been included at the Lnd to facilitate this." \ *
