In this lucid and highly readable study of the essence of mysticism, Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki, perhaps the greatest modern authority on the mystical aspects of both Oriental and Christian religions, compares the Zen and Shin Buddhism of the East with the writings of the German philosopher Meister Eckhart.
With a wealth of illustration and explanation Suzuki examines the underlying relationship between these three great schools of mysticism. With a wealth of illustration and explanation Suzuki examines the underlying relationship between these three great schools of mysticism. To illustrate his theme, Suzuki gathers together as the third part of this book a selection from the writings of Japanese mystics, which gives a unique impression of the depth and beauty of Japanese mystical thought. Suzuki was the unchallenged master of his subject and this re-issue of one of his best known books will have profound interest for all students of religion and philosophy.
Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki studied at Waseda and Otani Universities, and studied Zen under Shaku Soen. In 1933 he received his Ph.D. from Otani University and later taught at Columbia University. He died in 1966 at the age of ninety-five. Among his many books are Zen and Japanese Culture, Introduction to Zen Buddhism, Essays in Zen Buddhism, Studies in Zen, On Indian Mahayana Buddhism, and Shin Buddhism, which has also recently been re-issued by Allen and Unwin.
