On Good Friday 1300, he tells us, the poet was swept up in an electrifying vision and led by the souls of Virgil and Beatrice, the woman he had loved, across the gulfs of Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, through the spheres of Heaven and into the presence of God. Perhaps the culminating achievement,of medieval literature and theology. The Divine Comedy is also a self-portrait, drawing directly on Dante's experiences of political intrigue in Florence, exile under threat of death and disappointed hopes of a new dawn.
